Remember the first time you had to contract a junk removal company. Was it after the first major renovations on your first house or after a kitchen remodeling? Whatever it was, you probably looked at the mess a week later and thought, “I didn’t see this coming.”
You’re not alone.
Many people underestimate what a mess cleaning out junk is, and only understand how involving it is on day five of the cleanup, when the piles of trash and debris greet them by the gate, either because the junk removers failed to turn up for the second day in a row or because it’s just a lot of work.
Lesson #1: You cannot afford to hire the first junk cleaning company that catches your attention.
These are people who will be on your property for a good number of hours or days. They should be able to leave it in as good a state as they found it, minus the trash. So they must be ethical, polite, and experienced. The last thing you want to deal with is a damaged fence or garden, a dirty job, long hours spent haggling over extortionate invoices. You get the drift.
Further, they should properly dispose of all the trash coming from your house. You can’t be one of those conscious-living supporters who shout about responsibility towards the environment and then be a bad example when it’s your turn to practice your teachings.
Lesson #2: Do a thorough background on the company before hiring them to ascertain that values guide them.
Check their reviews and ratings on places like Better Business Bureau to know what other customers’ experiences with the company have been like.
Lesson #3: Visit the company’s website to see the specific services they provide.
Do they sort the trash or will all your junk end up in one place, both the usable and the wholly trashed? A good junk removal company sets aside what’s usable either for recycling or donation.
Are they professional enough to handle all categories of junk or will you end up looking for a second group of junk removers to control what the first group cannot?
Will they clean up when they’re done or will this be your mandate?
Lesson #4: Compare, and then Compare Some More
Pick at least three junk removing companies from your search and compare the services offered and their quote. Some may quote low but not provide all essential services. Others may give you a higher quote when their services are no different from those charging lower.
Take note that the final fee may be higher than the quote depending on the actual work the junk removers end up doing. The quote is -mostly based on the relative cubic measures the trash sits on, but even where the removers end up doing more than initially anticipated, the difference shouldn’t be huge.
Bonus Tip: If possible, choose a junk removal company that is close to your location. The longer the distance they cover to come to you, the higher the charges will be.
